How is the illuminated art glass made?
Our custom glass etching illuminated with LED lights begins with a very high grade of low iron crystal clear glass. The design is sand carved by hand. The concealed edges of the glass sculpture are illuminated with very high quality LED lights. Custom glass etching illuminated with LED lights is one of our most popular styles of art glass. Our etched glass is also available in traditional, non-illuminated pieces.
How long does it take?
Production time varies depending on what type of art glass is being created. Average production time is about 3-6 weeks for custom commissions that include glass fabrication. This will depend on our workload. Etched and carved glass that do not require glass fabrication or custom artwork, i.e. glass that you already have or client-supplied art, may be completed sooner. Projects that require custom framing may take longer.
How much does it cost?
All commissions are custom designed and created to your exact specifications. Fine art glass is usually a one-time investment that lasts a lifetime. There are many specifications that will determine our fee. No two pieces are alike. Even our finest pieces are only about the price of a weekly bottle of wine over the years that you will enjoy it.
We will work with you individually to prepare a custom quote. You can receive a quote by calling our office at (954) 973-2998 or email us at info@krystalglasscompany.com.
Can art glass be shipped?
Yes, art glass can be shipped to any destination. Your custom art glass will be carefully crated to protect against breakage, insured for the full value, and shipped by ground, air, or delivered to a South Florida port for overseas shipping.
Do you offer installation?
Yes. For most local projects it will be included unless you request us not to. We are also available for travel almost anywhere. You may also have your own glass company or general contractor do the installation.
Can you etch glass at my location?
Yes. We are mobile. Most on-site glass etching projects are done in an exterior area to protect your finished interior and HVAC system. We may be able to remove your glass, etch it in our studio or exterior area of your property, and then reinstall it for you.
What's th difference between etched glass and carved glass?

Carved glass is similar to etched glass, but glass carving goes much deeper into the glass. Pete uses a sand carving process for his carved glass, all done by hand, not machine. The result is a dramatic three dimensional appearance that offers timeless beauty and invites touch.

What's the difference between a positive and negative design?

A positive design is an etched design that looks white against the contrast of the glass. There are clear areas left in the background for visibility. Think of black type on white paper.  A negative design is done in reverse where the background is etched and the lines of the design are left clear. Think of white type of black paper. A negative design is popular when privacy is desired because there is minimal clear space left to see through. Here is a picture showing both styles.

Can you use my artwork?

Yes, in most cases we can use your artwork and Peter Edward can make any necessary modifications. Feel free to show us your ideas. If the image is copyrighted, you will need to obtain a release from the original artist.

What is the process to create custom art?
We can work from your idea, a picture that inspires you, or suggest something based on what you like. Peter Edward will create it on paper for your approval before any art is carved or etched on your glass or mirror.
Can you replace broken etched glass?
Yes, we are experts at duplicating original designs. We often replace broken etched glass entry doors that are part of a pair. Even if you don’t have a picture of the original, Peter Edward can work from the remaining side to recreate either a mirror image or a coordinating design. It will be as if it never happened.
How do I clean my art glass?
For glass that has been etched, carved and/or painted, spray a good quality glass cleaner or water on paper towels and then wipe the glass clean. Never use an abrasive or chemical cleanser of any kind on the art glass. Etched, carved, painted or clear lacquer art glass will likely be permanently damaged if subjected to harsh abrasive chemicals or scrubbing devices.

The best way to keep art glass free of potentially damaging dirt is to not touch the surface and to clean it regularly. Fingerprints, oils and water will likely stain the delicate surface of etched and carved glass especially if not cleaned right away.

Painted glass is more durable but will scratch if enough pressure is applied with hard or sharp objects. Please use care and ask others to avoid touching.

What is tempered glass?
Tempering is a heat strengthening process that causes glass to break into small safety pieces if hit hard enough. Tempering makes glass four times stronger than non-tempered glass. It is used in all bathroom applications, overhead spaces and high traffic areas such as commercial properties.
What is laminated glass?
Can you carve tempered glass?

Yes, slightly. The artist knows exactly how deep he can safely carve tempered glass.

Can you etch hurricane impact glass?
Yes. Most new doors and windows in Florida are made of hurricane impact glass.
Will light still transmit through etched glass?
Yes, light will transmit through etched glass and carved glass. It will not transmit solid painted glass or mirror very well as these backgrounds tend to be much more opaque.
Can glass be etched for privacy?

Yes, etched glass is a great way to offer privacy to the occupants of an interior space such as a home. Door glass is common to etch with a design that is either heavy or done as a negative design to minimize clear areas.

Why is glass green?

Iron causes the natural green tint that is inherent to regular glass. The green color of regular, or clear glass as it is called, is most noticeable when viewed from the edge. The color is less noticeable when viewing the glass straight on. There are other options available with more or less color.

What is Starphire glass?

Starphire is a brand name of very clear almost colorless glass. Another brand is Optiwhite. Both of these are great for  art glass that will have color such as LED illuminated art glass or painted art glass. Using Starphire or Optiwhite glass allows the true color of light or paint to show in art glass instead of having a green cast from normal clear glass.
